Since 1924 we have been producing buttons and fashion accessories which have been admired, both in Italy and abroad, for their elegance and Style. At one time production was based purely on Mother of pearl, trocas and other shells. Today however, the range includes an impressive selection of buttons made from a variety of natural materials such as horn, corozo, wood and leather. together with some metal and man-made items. In general, however, the emphasis is very much on "natural materials", which do not place a "burden" on the natural environment as use is made of side products, from, for example, pearl cultivation and beef farming, which are governed by evenmore sophisticated methods of aquaculture and bio-technology. These days, the competent authorities of most countries that produce mother-of-pearl carefully control shell farming criteria ( measurements, quality, quantity and 'crop' rotation ) making certain that the biological balance is maintained so that future availability is ensured. It is also becoming more usual to 'farm' the better species of shells, and this will surely lead to an even greater use of this "renewable" product. Corozo is, itself, a renewable product, coming as it does from palm seed. In this way, the price we "pay" to nature for damage that we have indirectly caused to the environment is certainly lower than it would be by making buttons in man-made items. |
